Breathing Space

By Susan Whitaker We have entered the quiet time of year. All around us, nature is slowing down, the rains are arriving, and the long evenings call us to rest. However, the world of commerce tells us that it’s time to shop, buy, bake, and run frantically to decorate for the holidays. It’s more important than ever that we support ourselves by taking time for self care during this season. Know that you have choices that will result in a healthier, happier holiday time for everyone. Here are a few ideas for giving yourself some breathing space, as we invite our inner light to shine:

~ Light a candle each evening as the sun goes down. This can remind you that there is always light, even during this naturally dark time of year. ~ Get outside in nature as often as you can, even if it’s just to walk around your yard in the evening. Tune into the phases of the moon. Welcome the sweetness of the cold air and breathe deeply. ~ Practice 5-10 minutes of deep breathing each day. Try the heart breath (from last month’s blog) or just slow, abdominal breathing. Encourage your family to join you. ~ Practice some restorative yoga, such as legs up the wall or a heart-lifting pose on a pillow. ~ Schedule a massage, facial, or something that pampers you. ~ Make a daily list of 3 things you’re grateful for. Include the little things that delight you and the big things that sustain you. ~ When you engage in a holiday activity, ask yourself if it really nourishes your soul or if you just “think you should” do it. You may be surprised at how just a few, meaningful things can bring a deeper meaning to your life. ~ Drop by the Wellness Within office and read a book, take a class, talk to someone, or just be.
