The word chakra means wheel. In yoga philosophy we focus on these areas of the body as storehouses of energy. They help us to move attention from the earth to the sky, from heaviness to lightness, and from the physical to the spiritual. This can bring us greater focus, lift our awareness, elevate our health, and will serve to bring harmony to the entire being. Practicing yoga with the chakras in mind helps to deepen our understanding of this process and how yoga offers a complete system of transformation. Each chakra is located along the spine in a specific area, often associated with various glands in the physical body. There are developmental aspects of each one, powers we can draw from, personality traits we can learn about, and additional breathing techniques that will enhance our knowledge. It’s a very rich system and each chakra can be explored for long periods of time. This is a very brief overview of the seven basic chakras . I’ve recorded videos on each one for you to enjoy, in hopes that they awaken a sense of playfulness.  Chakra Video Playlist

The Root chakra, located at the base of the spine, invites an awareness of our primary connection of the earth below us. It’s also called Muladhara chakra and is associated with the color red and the element of earth. Here we focus on our feet, legs, hips and the root of the spine as a way of deepening our relationship with the earth, which is a part of us. Think of the minerals in your bones and the stability of standing on two feet. We can say to ourselves “I am here” as a reminder of how the root chakra supports us. Notice how awareness of this chakra helps you to feel grounded.

The Sacral, or Belly, chakra helps you tune in to the element of water that flows throughout your body. It is also called the Svadisthana chakra and associated with the color orange. It’s the chakra of movement, of relationship to ourselves and others, to pleasure, to creativity, and the balance between the masculine and the feminine. It helps us to find both physical and emotional balance and to know who we are. Another way to experience this chakra is through meditation.  Listen to Abdominal Chakra Guided Meditation on our podcast channel. You can say to yourself, “I feel,” as you practice with the belly in mind.

The Solar Plexus chakra is in the center of the body, at the diaphragm. It’s also called the Manipura chakra and is associated with the color yellow, like the sun. This is where we store our life force energy. It houses the inner element of fire and the will. A strong solar plexus helps us feel self esteem, self discipline, self respect, generosity and the strength of our character. Notice how it helps you feel connected to your power. You can say " I am whole" as a reminder.

The Heart chakra is the realm of compassion and lovingkindness. It encompasses the chest area and is called the Anahata chakra, associated with the color green and the element of air. It is the very center of our energetic selves and home to the heart and lungs. Here is where we practice giving and receiving love, becoming expansive and accepting of ourselves and others. We work with our breath here. We can say to ourselves “I am love” as a reminder. Notice how it helps you feel more compassionate.

The Throat chakra is a place where we become intuitively aware of our wisdom. It is also called the Vishudda chakra and is connected to the color of sky blue, and the element of ether. It connects to the mouth, nose, ears, and throat. It tunes us into the sound of our breath and voice. From this chakra, you can express yourself and influence the world around you. Notice how this chakra connects you to your own creativity and communication. You can say "I speak" as a reminder.

The Third Eye chakra is also known as the Ajna chakra - the seat of wisdom. It is associated with pure light and all elements. Here we can connect to our intuition, insight, dreams and visions. It helps us in balancing all of the other chakra energies. When it is balanced, the mind becomes strong. Rest your thoughts lightly on this inner eye. You can say "I know" as you explore the third eye area.

The Crown chakra is the place right above the head, where we navigate higher levels of energy. It's often called the thousand-petaled lotus and has the color of amethyst light. When open, this chakra communicates and receives from a higher source. It is influenced by spirituality, a sense of oneness with all that is, and love. An affirmation for this chakra is" I effortlessly receive and integrate guidance and light.”

I invite you to approach the chakra practices with a sense of openness and enjoyment. As you get to know more about how the chakras are expressed through you, it will enhance your awareness and encourage you feel more at home in your body.
